Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics to attach archwires to the brackets. These elastics degrade within a few weeks and require frequent replacement. These elastics also create significant friction which slows down tooth movement and requires heavier forces to overcome. This means that orthodontic treatment can be completed with self-ligating braces with lighter forces and in less time with fewer and less frequent appointments. Drs. Carroll and Sutton use metal, clear ceramic and lingual self-ligating braces exclusively.
The most common complaint about traditional clear ceramic braces is that they stain between appointments. Since self-ligating ceramic braces do not require clear elastics, which stain, this is not an issue.
